How do we score compost reviews?

We don’t hand out stars at random. Every compost on MultipurposeCompost.co.uk is rated using our MPC Balanced Scorecard v9 — a transparent, evidence-based way to compare composts on Ease of Use, Composition, and Sustainability. Each brand is observed and compared against measurable indicators gardeners actually notice, like how easy it is to re-wet, how consistent the texture feels, or how long the mix stays productive. Scores are combined and normalised to a clear 1–5 rating so you can make fair comparisons across products and price points.

Going a Step Further

We take the scoring system further. By answering four quick context questions (for example, whether you’re growing in pots, beds, or containers), the results can adjust to show which composts best fit your situation. That means your shortlist reflects practical fit — not just an average score.

Our Review Method (MPC Balanced Scorecard v7)

The Scorecard has evolved through multiple refinements to reflect how composts actually perform in use. It combines hands-on visual checks with structured comparisons of measurable properties.

CategoryWhat We CompareWhy It Matters
Ease of UseConsistency, handling, texture, re-wetting, odour, feeding intervalA good compost should be pleasant and predictable to use
Composition & PerformanceFibre blend, structure, moisture, pH, nutrient balance, WHC / FAS indicatorsThese features influence root health and plant resilience
SustainabilityRecycled content, packaging type, transport miles, supplier transparency, certificationsCompost should support the planet as well as your plants

Each sub-score is weighted to ensure balance — for instance, a clean, fine coir blend might re-wet more slowly, while a coarser green-waste mix might score higher on circularity. The weighting system keeps comparisons fair and relevant.

Why We Don’t Use Plant Growth Tests

We’re often asked why we don’t run plant growth trials. The reason is simple: to produce data that’s scientifically reliable you’d need to test multiple bags from multiple batches, across thousands of plants, under tightly controlled conditions — something that can cost well over £250,000 per product.

Instead, we focus on what can be measured and compared reliably: the known science of good growing-media design and clear evidence that suppliers are following those principles. This approach keeps the results meaningful, affordable, and relevant to real gardeners.

Why Our Method Is Different

  • Independent & transparent – Based on observable, measurable indicators – never sponsored claims.
  • Versioned & traceable – Each review notes the current system name (e.g. MPC Balanced Scorecard v7) for transparency.
  • Context-aware – Optional questions personalise results to your gardening style.
  • Evolving – As new compost formulations appear, the Scorecard evolves to keep comparisons fair and up to date.

In Short

Our MPC Balanced Scorecard v7 turns compost reviews from opinions into useful comparisons. It’s about clarity, not claims — helping you choose the compost that best fits your plants, your garden, and your values.
