Personal observations
This was the most surprising product in the test, and not in a good way. It is extraordinarily fine — the lightest dry bulk density in the entire test group alongside Miracle-Gro Moisture Control — and when wetted it forms a sludge-like layer on top rather than absorbing evenly. There is no visible structure, no fibre, no aggregates. My first thought was that this must be some form of highly processed digestate or lignite. When I checked the bag more carefully and looked up the product, it is Irish peat — something I genuinely had not expected to still be on sale in a mainstream garden centre in 2026. The product performs adequately on water retention (3.0 times dry weight) and dries in 20 minutes, but the texture is so uniform and fine that it compacts easily and would be prone to surface capping. The manufacturer does list many peat-free alternatives under the same brand, so this appears to be a legacy product still in circulation. Worth knowing about if you are trying to avoid peat.
