Verve (B&Q) compost test April 2026

Verve – peat-free multipurpose compost review

Brand: Verve MPC | Supplier: B&Q | Price: £0.14/litre

Personal observations

Verve is B&Q’s own-brand compost, sitting below Miracle-Gro and Westland in the price hierarchy. Opening the bag, the first thing you notice is the high wood-fibre content — there is a lot of fluff, and after sieving a significant proportion of the material is retained above 10mm, nearly 9% of the sample. The texture and fibre type look very similar to Westland’s mainstream products, which raises the question of whether this is a rebranded or closely related product from the same supply chain. Water retention is below average at 2.1 times dry weight, and drying is fast at 20 minutes. The material does not clump. The coarse fibre fraction is the main practical limitation — this product would struggle in seed trays or for lawn top-dressing where you need fine, consistent material. For basic container and bedding use it does the job at a competitive price.

WHC below the typical 2.5× organic baseline, suggesting a limited compost or humic fraction relative to the wood-fibre content. The coarse fraction on the sieve is almost entirely fibre fluff — relevant for lawn top-dressing where fibre strands resist raking in.

B&Q in-store price only — purchasing online adds delivery cost and is not recommended for bulk compost. For an explanation of why brands offer multiple product types at different price points, see our FAQ.
