How To?

Guides for the Home & Garden

How to Repot Your Plant.

If your plant looks cramped or water runs straight through the pot, it may be time to repot. Repotting gives roots more room, refreshes nutrients, and keeps your plants thriving.

Prepare Your New Pot:

When?

  • Best done in spring or early summer when plants are actively growing.
  • Avoid repotting during dormancy (usually winter).

Pick a Pot:

  • Pick one that’s 2-5cm (1–2 inches) larger in diameter than the current pot.
  • Ensure it has drainage holes to prevent root rot.

Pick a Suitable Potting Mix:

  • Multipurpose Compost for House Plants (Check our reviews to find a suitable potting mix)
  • Succulent Mix for Succulents e.g. Cactus

Add a Base of Potting Mix:

Add potting mix to your new pot, so that when potted, the base of the stem of your plant will be at around the lip of your pot (near the top).

Removing the Plant:

  • Moisten the soil slightly
  • Confidently tip the pot sideways whilst supporting the base of the plant
  • Gently squeeze and tap around the sides of the pot until the bulb of soil comes loose
  • Gently ease out the plant whilst supporting the full wait of the soil and base of plant with your hand
  • Gently loosen the bottom of the roots to give space to grow. You should be very careful with delicate roots.
  • Trim off any dead, mushy, or blackened roots – otherwise leave alone
  • Slip plant into new pot whilst continuing to support the full wait of the soil and base of plant
  • Gently rotate pot to correct orientation if not already
  • Position plant so that it is sitting pointing straight up
  • Pour potting mix around the side of the plant to fill up the remaining space.
  • Very lightly firm base of the new soil to remove air pockets. Never heavily compact soil as this could suffocate the roots and prevent microbes from thriving.
  • You have now repotted your plant!

Water After Repotting?

Typical house plant:

Soak until water drains out the bottom of the pot.

Succulents e.g. Cacti:

Do not water after repotting. The roots need time to recover. Wait 7-10 days and then give them a soak until water drains out the bottom of the pot.
