Short answer: Not all multipurpose composts are the same? — but they’re all designed with the same goals in mind.
All major compost makers aim for roughly the same performance — good aeration, moisture balance, and short-term feeding — but they reach those targets using different ingredients and production methods.
Some rely more on coir, others on wood fibre, and others (notably PAS100 and local compost makers) on green material.
So while the goals are similar, the feel and behaviour can vary: one mix may stay wetter, another may drain faster or compact sooner. That’s why you may find one brand works better for your way of watering, pots, or climate.
What actually varies?
- Ingredients: Peat, coir, wood fibre, composted green waste, digestate, loam — every brand uses a different recipe.
- Texture & particle size: Fine blends hold water well; coarse ones drain fast and lose structure.
- Nutrient levels: Some are pre-fed with slow-release fertiliser; others are almost inert.
- Stability: Fresh, immature composts can slump or smell; matured mixes stay aerated for longer.
Why it matters
- A bag labelled “multipurpose” might suit bedding plants — but not seeds or long-term containers.
- A peat-free mix can be great — or poor — depending on how well it’s blended.
- Green-waste blends can perform well in beds but may be too rough for pots.
If you’ve ever wondered why one bag dries out overnight and another grows lush plants — this is why.
Tony’s tip
Think of “multipurpose” as a starting point, not a guarantee.
Check what’s in the bag.
For seeds, buy a seed compost.
For containers, look for fine texture and slow-release nutrients.
For raised beds, go for a mix with more structure and organic matter.
