Using Multipurpose Compost for Pots, Containers and Hanging Baskets

It’s one of the most common questions gardeners ask:

  • Can I use multipurpose compost for pots?
  • Is it OK for containers and patio planters?
  • Will it work in hanging baskets?

Yes — Multipurpose Compost (MPC) is made for exactly this kind of use. How you use it just depends on how much time you want to give your plants — a quick season, or a living mix that improves year after year.

Two ways to approach potting

Straightforward:
Use MPC straight from the bag for clean, reliable results in pots, containers and hanging baskets. Once the built-in feed runs out, top up with a balanced liquid or slow-release fertiliser — then refresh or replace the compost each season for best results.

Soil-building:
Add a little PAS100 compost, home compost or biochar. This brings back microbes and natural structure, creating a living root zone that steadily improves nutrient cycling, water balance and resilience — especially for larger containers or perennials kept year-round.

Quick tips for pots, containers and baskets

  • Give pots good drainage — raise them slightly off the ground or use crocks at the base.
  • In hanging baskets, mix in water-retaining granules or a little biochar to reduce drying.
  • Don’t press MPC down too firmly; light structure helps roots breathe and microbes thrive.
