How to Start Seeds Successfully

There’s a knack to getting seeds going — and it starts with what they’re sitting in.

Rule of thumb: keep it fine, gentle, and evenly moist.

Step 1 — Choose or mix the right medium

The gold standard is a seed-sowing compost.

If you prefer to mix your own:

  • 2 parts fine-sieved MPC
  • 1 part perlite or fine sand
  • 1 part mature home compost

This blend drains well, holds just enough water, and avoids nutrient shock.

Step 2 — Keep it steady

Warmth (around 18–22 °C) and even moisture are key. Don’t drown them — seeds need air as much as water.

Step 3 — Feed later, not sooner

Once seedlings have true leaves, move them into a richer mix or start gentle feeding. Until then, resist the urge to help — they’ve got all they need inside the seed.

Why not just use MPC?

Because it’s too strong and too coarse. Unless it specifically says “for seeds,” skip it.
