1. Pick a container:

Use small pots or seed trays with drainage holes.

2. Choose the right Multipurpose Compost:

The label MUST state “for seeds” – do not use a generic MPC – (see why at our full ‘which compost FAQ’).

3. If you want to make you own Seed Growing Medium, mix together:

Use small pots or seed trays with drainage holes.

  • 2 parts fine-sieved Multipurpose Compost
  • 1 part perlite or fine sand
  • 1 part mature home compost

This blend drains well, holds just enough water, and avoids nutrient shock.

4. Plant the Seeds:

  • Check the seed packet for depth instructions. A good general rule is to plant the seeds about twice as deep as their size.
  • For very tiny seeds, press them gently onto the soil surface.

5. Gently water:

Keep the soil moist but not soggy. A spray bottle or fine watering can is ideal.

6. Place in warmth good light :

  • Place containers on a sunny windowsill or under grow lights.
  • Most seeds germinate best at room temperature or slightly warmer.

7. Feed later, not sooner:

Once seedlings have true leaves, replant (move) them into a richer mix. For replanting you can more to a general purpose MPC or mix your own:

A. Richer Mix – Mix together:

  • 2 parts Multipurpose Compost
  • 1 part Compost
  • 1 part Perlite or Vermiculite
  • Optional – A handful of worm castings (for a natural nutrient boost)

B. Lightly water – the seedlings in their current container about an hour before moving them.

C. Fill small pots or trays – with your richer compost mix.

D. Firm it down lightly – and make a small hole in the centre with your finger, pencil, or dibber.

E. Use a pencil, plant label, or teaspoon to gently lever each seedling out – from underneath. Always hold seedlings by their leaves, never the stem (stems bruise easily and won’t recover).

F. Place the seedling into the hole you made – ensuring roots are spread out and not bent upwards. Firm the compost gently around the roots so the plant stands upright.

G. Give the seedlings a gentle watering – to settle the compost around the roots. Keep them out of direct strong sun for a day or two to recover.

H. Aftercare – Keep the compost moist but not soggy. Once they’re established, you can start light liquid feeding if they’ll be in pots for several weeks before planting out.
