How To?

Guides for the Home & Garden

How to Water Your Plant.

Getting watering right starts with understanding your compost. Different composts hold and release moisture at very different rates. Here’s how to match your watering habits to your compost type so your plants thrive year-round.

Typical House Plants:

How?

Water thoroughly until it runs from the base, then allow partial drying before the next soak.

When?

  • Typically water around every 7 days in Summer and around every 10-14 days in winter.
  • Use your fingers to check moisture level or pick up the pot to check the weight. A light pot = time to water.
  • Check moisture levels often so that you learn how fast your plant drinks, and water accordingly.

Top tip?

Always pick up the plant by the pot, never by the stem. Roots are brittle and can easily snap.

Succulents, incl Cactus:

How?

Soak until it runs from the base and then don’t water again until soil is dry.

When?

  • Typically water around once every 2-3 weeks in winter, and 1-2 weeks in summer. Always check how dry your soil is first before watering!
  • Succulents are far more tolerant of drought than of excess moisture, so overwatering can cause root rot and kill your desert friend!

Top Tip

Rainwater

Collected rainwater avoids lime build-up and helps maintain a balanced pH – important for your plants ability to absorb nutrients!

Saucers

Place saucers under outdoor pots during heatwaves to hold a small water reserve!

Common Mistakes

  • Watering on a fixed schedule without checking compost moisture first.
  • Letting water pool on compacted compost surfaces—loosen gently to restore aeration.
  • Overwatering succulents or cacti—always wait until compost is completely dry.
