Signs It Is Time to Report Your Plant:

  • Visible roots – Roots growing out of drainage holes, out the top of your potting mix or circling tightly inside the pot (if visible).
  • Water drains too quickly – Soil no longer retains moisture, often because it’s compacted.
  • Growth has slowed or stopped – Despite good light and feeding.
  • Plant looks top-heavy – The plant is tipping over or looks too large for its pot.
  • Yellowing or drooping leaves – Can signal root stress from being pot-bound.

How Often to Repot:

  • Fast-growing plants: May need repotting every year.
  • Slow-growing plants: Every 2–3 years is usually enough.
  • Large, mature plants: Instead of repotting, refresh the top few inches of potting mix (“top-dressing”) every year and repot when it shows signs of needing to be repotted
